Colourism

Why did you make this?

I originally wanted to create a web application that would make colour schemes that I could use in web designs. The idea was to put it on my site for clients to have a play with to help them make a choice of the colour for their websites. It evolved over the course of the build into a personalised colour selector. Unfortunately it got stuck in to a pile with other half built apps as client work got prioritised.

When did you think of it?

I made the first working build of the site about 2 years ago. I never really had the time to improve upon it because of client work. The idea was always sitting at the back of my mind. I started work on the version you see now in Jan 2009 whilst I was travelling around Thailand and Malaysia. Four flights, two ferries, two trains and coach journey later it was finished.

How does it work?

The web application takes your first name, last name and birthday, then through a series of steps coverts itin to your unique colour. The web application ensures a diverse spread of resultant colours which makes your colour truly unique.

How many unique colours can Colourism generate?

There are more than 16 million different colours that can be generated.

Why do I get a different colour if I use my middle name or an abbreviation of my name?

You should enter the name that you are commonly called by. Everyone has a formal (birth certificate) name, for example mine is Callum Jon Rimmer, but everyone calls me Callum Rimmer. My friends call me Cal.

I made Colourism to take the name you are most commonly called by and your birthday, then turn it in to a colour.

Are you going to do anything else with it?

I will see how popular it is. If it looks like people like it then I will add a few more features like colour comparisons, maybe some celebrity colours, some simple social networking features (forums, blog, messaging and profiles) and a few website/downloadable widgets. I am open to any suggestions you might have - email me here
